Can you train a bet hound to be used as a hunting dog?

were getting a bet puppy in a few weeks, and i like to go bird hunting, (pheasants, quail, grouse) and i would like to know if i can train a bet to flush and retrieve the birds, i know that a lab or retriever would be a better choice, but my family wants a bet hound.
