What is the cause of doing a crooked sit-up?

when I do sit-up (hands behind head with finger interlaced) feet tucked in under the couch for support I have the tendacy to wiggly I guess. I dont go straight up I kinda go to the side and then lift myself up. Why does this happen or why do I do this. And how can i avoid it and improve?
