How do I foul off pitches on MLB 08 The Show? Or is this random.?

I like to run the pitcher's pitch count early perferably about 90 pitches thrown by the end of 5th inning. I do this incase I have trouble hitting against the starting pitcher and they will go to the bullpen and have some luck there. Fouling pitches off is a good way to run the count but how do I do that or does this happen randomly?
