Is it difficult to travel around in Japan without a tour guide?

I am planning for my honeymoon with my hubby and is our 1st time to Japan. We will like to go on free & easy, but both of us are english speaking. So communication will be a problem. Would like to ask if it is possible to move ard in Japan even though we cant speak japanese. Hope to hear more opinions. :)
