8gb pendrive gone mad..!!?

Some pen drives have a physical switch on them that will lock the drive into read only mode. This is to prevent accidental erasure of files, but it also will prevent the format from working. If you have a physical switch on that device, switch it to the opposite position and try again. If there is no physical switch or if this doesn't fix it, then you may be right about the trash can.
