Homework help! What are the benefits and disadvantages of euphemisms? Give examples for each.?
Let me try. A words never has exact meaning because words are not maths. Often the situation in which a word is used becomes part of the meaning. The interpretation of a situation can change in time and culture. There can be some attempts to narrow down the meaning to improve consistency, reflect a change in how same situation is viewed now buy using a new word. As diplomatic use of language becomes popular a better feeling word may be substituted. Sometimes changes are made to reflect secrecy or for the fashion statement. Fashion is to look different from others and that is why it needs a constant change when others also do same. Using a differnt word delibrately to same meaning is I think Euphemisms. Later on may be when it becomes common usage I am not sure it is still Euphemisms may be yes till we remember original words. It can be a powerful tool to explain difficult situation in a more acceptable way. It can be also delebrate ploy used by spin doctors to create illusion that is far from real truth.
