What are the jobs for on maplestory (cygnus, explorers, evans,aran)?

I'm new to this game and when I was in the process of creating a character i saw three things i can choose from, cygnus knights, explorers, evans, arans. What are they for? I saw stats under neath them and the max level they can level to. How do i pick my cl and stuff?
